Billings Livestock Commission Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 06/14/2018
Billings Livestock Commission – Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 06/14/2018
Receipts: 4,125 Last Week: 1,522 Year Ago: N/A
Compared to last week: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested this week to develop any market trend. Quality this week was
mostly plain to average. Demand for feeder cattle was light to moderate on light supplies. Market activity was moderate. Weigh
up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to 1.00 higher
on lean and boning cows. Breaking cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones
were noticed. Packers were more active this week in purchasing offerings both to feed and send to immediate harvest. With July
4th only a few weeks away packers opted to put a small portion of cows away on short term feed for the upcoming holiday. Feeding
cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher as packers and feeding buyers
both showed stronger demand for high quality feeding cows. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm on stronger demand from all
packer buyers. Feeding bull buyers also bid aggressively for thinner and lighter weight bulls which helped push average and lower yielding
bulls slightly higher. 2 year olds to young age cows sold mixed as feeding quality cows sold lower, while rebreed quality cows sold steady.
A very heavy offering of pairs was seen this week and the stands were full of buyers looking for high quality offerings to fill summer
pastures and range land. Demand for pairs was mostly good as prices continue to inch higher. The feeder cattle offering was 41 percent steers
and bulls, 59 percent heifers with 49 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Today supply consisted of 19 percent feeder cattle, 8 percent slaughter
cows, 1 percent slaughter bulls, 23 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
